Columbia Road NW Storefronts – Then and Now

The color photo, taken by Hola Cultura’s Oliver Garretson, shows storefronts along Columbia Road NW in July 2015.

The original caption for the black and white photo reads: “Stores with signs in Spanish along Columbia Rd.” on Aug. 5, 1974. Photo by Pete Copeland, the Washington Star. The Zodiac was a popular Latino records store. Next door, the sign above reads “Andromeda,” one of the city’s first health clinics responding to the needs of Latin American immigrants coming to Washington D.C. at the time. Andromeda, which has since moved to Columbia Heights, came up in last night’s screening of “El Barrio, Webisode 1.” Thanks to everyone who attended! We had a fascinating conversation.

**Part of an occasion series of BEFORE/AFTER photographs of Washington D.C. Latinos community and landmarks. Come back again soon for more historic views of the District!

See you next Tuesday at Petworth Library, when our Fall Screening Series concludes with an episode of Latino Americans, followed by a discussion of language and identify with American University’s Amelia Tseng.
