Oct. 6—EPISODE FIVE with post-film discussion about the role language plays in identity led by Amelia Tseng

(AND TODAY at 6:30 p.m. Don’t miss El Barrio, Webisode 1:  A Village Apart / una villa aparte)

In the U.S. culture wars, language plays a leading role, perhaps because of the way it shapes identity and can both create and divide communities. What does your language mean to you? Join Hola Cultura for a screening of the final episode of the PBS documentary Latino Americans: Peril and Promise (1980-2000), and followed by a discussion of language and identity with Amelia Tseng.

Director of Bilingual Education at American University,  Dr. Tseng brings her expertise in sociolinguistics and education to her role as Lecturer and Director of the Bilingual Education program at American University. Amelia successfully defended her Ph.D dissertation on Latino language practices and identity in Washington, D.C. at Georgetown University and holds an M.S. in Linguistics from Georgetown University, an M.A. in Spanish from Arizona State University, and a B.A. in English Honors and Spanish Magna Cum Laude from Wellesley College. Amelia’s research and teaching interests center on the sociolinguistics of language and identity in multilingual immigrant communities. She has published on code-switching and bilingual radio, and has taught languages and linguistics at the university and K-12 levels. Her teaching and research has been recognized through awards from Georgetown University, the Society for Applied Anthropology (SfAA), and the National Science Foundation (NSF).
