As Hispanic Heritage Month begins, here are our top picks for Sept. 14 to 21.

Thurs., Sept. 14

The Latin American Film Festival

This annual festival showcasing films from throughout the Spanish- and Portuguese-language films. This year’s festival kicks off with “Such is Life in the Tropics.” (Sin Muertos No Ha Carnaval), a 2017 Oscar selection from Ecuador. The film’s star Daniel Adam Gilbert will be there for a post-screening Q&A and reception. For more films and information, visit the AFI Silver website.

 

Actor Gael García Bernal at the Warner Theatre

While Latin American films premiere in Silver Spring, in downtown Washington D.C., the Hispanic Heritage Foundation will award the Mexican actor with its Vision Award at the Annual Hispanic Heritage Awards at the Historic Warner Theatre.

 

Fri., Sept. 15

Panamanian festival continues

The University of the District of Columbia is the site today of “Folkloric Extravaganza Esencia Folklórico,” part of a five day festival celebrating the “Esencia del Folklore” of this Central American country. Sat., Sept. 16

Fiesta DC Hispanic Heritage Parade, Washington’s biggest celebration of our Latin American roots begins two days of partying on Constitution Avenue NW between 7th and 14th streets NW between 1 p.m and 5 p.m.

 

Mariachi Herencia de México

Chicago’s Mariachi Herencia de México celebrates Mexican Independence Day with musical tributes to Mexican legends including Juan Gabriel, José Alfredo Jiménez, Lola Beltrán, and Lucha Villa, among others on the Kennedy Center’s Millennium Stage. Sun., Sept.17

Fiesta DC continues with a street festival featuring live music and food starting at 11 a.m. and running through 7 p.m. on Pennsylvania Avenue NW between 3rd and 7th streets NW.

 

Wed., Sept. 20

Chris Urquiaga plays a free concert at the Kennedy Center. This 2016–2017 Strathmore Artist in Residence is a singer-songwriter and pianist who performs a fusion of pop, R&B and Latin music in English, Spanish, and Portuguese. This free Millennium Stage concert begins at 6 p.m.

 

Thurs., Sept. 21
