Tuesday: Lecture on the Maya Civilization

By | Published | No Comments

Inter-American Development Bank presents “Maya Civilization: 3000 years in the Making,” an evening with Guatemalan archaeologist and National Geographic Society Explorer Francisco Estrada-Belli

From the announcement:

Perhaps what’s most fascinating about the Maya is how they built a sophisticated and elegant civilization in a very unlikely place: the jungle marshes of the Yucatan peninsula. The Maya continue to surprise us with each new discovery of yet more elaborate and ever more ancient remains of their culture. It is one of the greatest civilizations of the ancient world, but also one that persists in the present and that might still have many more secrets to share with us.

Dr. Estrada-Belli is Research Assistant Professor of Archaeology at Boston University, and his latest book is entitled “The First Maya Civilization. Ritual and Power before the Classic Period” (Routledge, 2010). He is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London, and President of the Maya Archaeology Initiative.
