Two Washington area artists are among the finalists in a national poster design contest sponsored by the Friends of the American Latino Museum.

Jaime Flores and Elizabeth Sass, who both reside in northern Virginia, are among five finalists from around the country whose work now moves to the public voting portion of the second annual Campaign Design Contest. The winning poster will be the featured image of the group’s 2013 media campaign to establish a National American Latino Museum on the National Mall.

Jaime Flores of Alexandria, better known as Shaggy Flores, is a poet who, according to his website, has worked to reinvigorate the Nuyorican poetry movement in recent years.

Flores’ design was inspired by his earliest childhood memories with his grandmother and his friend, the fronterizo artist Francisco Delgado, according to the contest website.

“Oftentimes our contributions to the growth of this nation are overlooked, so the creation of this museum perhaps will help to create another vehicle for national attention and discussion on our role in forging the Americas,” Flores told Hola Cultura as to why he thinks the creation of the museum is important.

The second Virginia finalist, Elizabeth Sass, resides in Annandale and recently graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute with a degree in architecture. In her spare time she does graphic design and screen-printing. On the contest website, Sass says her design aims to illustrate elements specific to Latin American music as well as highlight and celebrate Latin American music within itself and within the American culture.

The other finalists are Gene Jimenez of Orange, Calif., a faculty member of the University of Redlands’ art department; Ana Maria Villegas, a portrait artist from Coral Gables, Fla.; and graphic designers Brittany Alfonzo and Justin Hannis of Bellflower, Calif.

Last day to vote for the winning design is next Thursday, April 25,  at 11:59 p.m. Pacific Standard Time.  You can see all the designs and vote here. The winner will not only have their design featured in the national media campaign, they will also travel to D.C. for Cinco de Mayo celebrations.
