Hola Cultura is a vibrant, multifaceted nonprofit based in Washington, DC, that celebrates the arts and contributions of Latinos in Washington, D.C.

By acknowledging the Latino community’s rich cultural heritage, we help create alternative narratives that challenge the stereotypes. On our website and at our events, we showcase talented D.C. Latinos and serve as “cultural translators” to our wider local community interested in Latin culture in the nation’s capital.

Focus Areas. Education is core to our mission. We use storytelling, research, and dialogue to challenge stereotypes and build pathways to success for Latinos by celebrating their contributions to the vibrant city of Washington, D.C.

Journalism & Media. We produce media coverage of Latino art that shines a light on our vibrant community. In 2016, we published 125+ articles, web videos, and numerous interviews with local culture creators. Coverage shared by the Washington Post.

Research. During the summer months, our interns and volunteers conducted an historical research and GIS mapping project documenting DC’s changing local culture.

Events. Our 2nd annual TamalFest DC on Dec. 4, 2016, celebrated Latino culture and history through food, building on the overwhelming success of last year’s sold-out event.

Education & Training Programs. Our high school and college interns and volunteers gain technical skills and experience through their work for our organization.

Hola Cultura is a non-profit organization established with the goal of offering a tribute to “Latino culture” in all of its grandeur and diversity. It serves as a bridge between those interested in cultural events and its producers; albeit locals or those visiting the DC area. It recovers the memories of the Hispanic community of Washington thanks to its webumentary videos. It elaborates journalistic investigations of a practical scope, such as the issue of Housing and Rent Control for minority communities. It elaborates digital maps that document the presence of the “barrio” in DC from the 40s up until the present. It even organizes community events such as the successful Tamal Fest.

Our mission is with and for culture. Our purpose lies in contributing relevant and valuable information for the community’s use as well as of the community for the rest of the world to see. We believe that the barrio is not just a group of houses sharing a similar location delimited by a road and an avenue, but rather, it is a large group of peoples disseminated in many places connected through language, traditions, folklore, music and food.

In Hola Cultura, you will find reviews of books and films, productions and exhibitions of local as well as international artwork. You can also enjoy video interviews not only with specialists on culture and art, but also with your own neighbors on subject matter of day-to-day life, such as recipes as cherished as your very own grandmother’s.

HClogoSM2nwWe consider ourselves chroniclers of the day-to-day occurrences of latino culture in the city of Washington DC. However, we also promote culturally rich events that make us feel proud to be a part of the community, or that involve a significant community participation. We understand that part of our mission is to preserve the memory of this imaginary barrio that is the metropoLatino area of DC.

Truth be told, we have also become a digital archive of sorts. In this archive, you will be able to find our own publications dedicated to food, literature and identity. You will be able to see specialists in Spanish debate over subject matter in the Spanish language, as well listen to renowned chefs of the city of Washington disclose their secret ingredients. And of course, you will have the chance to see auto portraits of local artists, or read original poems from local writers.

In 2013, we began what we call the “Summer Investigations : DC Latino Story Project” in which interviews were conducted with members of the Caribbean community that arrived in Washington DC in the 40s.

In 2014, we documented the presence of Latinos through their murals around the city and discovered that the oldest mural in Washington DC was painted by a Latino. The mural was found to be in danger of disappearing on multiple occasions and was saved thanks to the participation of the neighborhood community.

In 2015 we expanded our team and expectations, which led us to realize an ambitious project that we denominated “Housing DC: Latino story and housing”. It included the creation of digital maps, live ‘oral story’ interviews to neighbors- including reports and chronicles regarding the situation of the living expenses in Adams Morgan and Mount Pleasant. The investigation trickled into the issues and costs of rent by working with the neighborhood associations and tackling issues regarding the continuous disappearance of buildings due to the Rent Control laws, as well as what these laws have meant in regards to the displacement of the Latino community into the outskirts of DC, where the rent is now more reasonably priced than in the metropolitan zone. The investigation of this project has been shared with different organizations, including individuals that need information regarding where and how to get help, or who and where to go to in order to request subsidized accommodation.

This is all solely part of our summer work. During the remainder of the year and with the help of our interns and collaborators, we are charged with covering the cultural and artistic events in the metropolitan area by supporting a wide variety of artists and cultural institutions such as museums, theater, galleries and other 501s involved in culture and education. On a grander scale, we assist by providing support to events hosted by  Latin American and Spanish embassies, to organizers of cultural events an concerts, to visiting artists, and to international festivals that visit our city.

We consider ourselves a bridge, a fan of ideas, a link, a key, a mirror, a window and a magazine; an authentically smiling sun!

Knowing and familiarizing oneself with our culture and becoming a part of it is the only way to grow as a community; reaching out to all is what keeps the “barrio” alive and makes us one, which is the true meaning of Hola Cultura.
