By | Published | No Comments

UPDATE #2: At 6:45 p.m., we’re at 90% of our goal! There are still a few two-ticket, three-ticket, and four-ticket packages available online. Help us make over the finish line by purchasing online tickets and save before we sell out again!

UPDATE: At 7 a.m., we are at 80% of our goal with a little more than two days to go until online ticketing ends.

img_0001Meet the chefs! This morning we bring you interviews with two more participants in TamalFest DC. Nuestra entrevista con Maria Isabel Rivera del equipo costarricense Pura Vida. Meanwhile Michael O’Connor talks about “la nana” who inspired his catering business Cocinana. Read all the interviews on our sister site: https://holaculturamas.wordpress.com

Besides all the fabulous food and the live music at TamalFest DC, we’ll have kids’ activities, arts and handmade crafts, raffles, videos and more.

Latxmascard_ccin American-style arts & crafts

This year we’ve added a mini-holiday fair featuring the work of local Latino artists and other creative members of our community.  There will be hand-knitted hats by Silvia Murillo, the holiday cards by Carlos Carmonamedina, Mayan weavings, Hola Cultura t-shirts and more!

Bilingual Story Time & tamal-inspired fun!

Hola Cultura is proud to be partnering with the SED Center on fun activities for children seven-years-old and younger. Drop by the kids’ area for a reading of the book, “¡Qué montón de Tamales! (Too Many Tamales)“, by Gary Soto or bring your little ones so they can make their own playdough tamales.

Purchase your tickets online before Friday at noon and become a backer of TamalFest DC. See you Sunday!

bigmarkTVLTERS1Videos & Video Booth

With a grant from Humanities DC, we’ll have a video booth at this year’s TamalFest to record all the wonderful memories, stories of family and community and other tamal tales. Come with your recollections or share your insights into the enduring culinary tradition. We’ll edit the interviews into one final program and present it on Hola Cultura. Don’t forget to sign up for an interview.

We’ll screen Hola Cultura’s webumentaries, such as “El Arte de la Cocina | Kitchen Arts,” conversations with some of Washington’s top Latino chefs about how FOOD IS CULTURE and how sharing meals and recipes are ways of affirming our identity and passing our heritage from one generation to the next.

Raffles

We’ve got children’s books from one of the country’s premier Hispanic publishers, Arte Publico Press; gift certificates from Amsterdam Falafelshop; and other donated items for the raffles.

Thank you to our sponsors and partners!

Humanities DC, Panam International Supermarket, the DC Mayor’s Office on Latino Affairs, Spanish Education Development (SED) Center, Carlos Rosario International Public Charter, and Raíces Culturales Latinoamericanas
