Weekend: Paso Nuevo youth theater takes on gun violence

By | Published | No Comments

PasoMalosPosterPaso Nuevo, the D.C. youth theater troupe that won recognition from First Lady Michelle Obama last fall, will stage the world premier of “Tough Reality/Pasos Malos” this weekend at Gala Hispanic Theatre.

The free show, a collaboration with The Theatre Lab, will feature visiting artists performing along side the talented D.C. teenagers.

The theme the production is a timely one: Gun violence that takes a heavy toll on young people nationwide–including in the Washington-area, where shootings have been in the local news repeatedly this year.  Quique Avilés and Matthew Vaky co-wrote and co-direct la obra, which will be performed in English with some Spanish.

“Tough Reality addresses the constant struggle and tension experienced by disadvantaged youth and the challenges they face to stay above the fray,” according to the press release.

Performing with Paso Nuevo are visiting artists Walker Valdez and the DreamYard Bronx Acting Ensemble. Valdez, a Bolivian-American poet and former member of Paso Nuevo and Spoken Resistance, rejoins the group on Friday night. On Saturday, DreamYard Bronx Acting Ensemble comes to town from New York City for an artistic exchange. That evening the D.C. and N.Y.C. youths will present a new collaborative piece. The two theater troupes met last November when both received National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Awards at the White House.
