Festival continues through Oct. 5

afi_laffThis year the Latin American Film Festival features 37 unique culture-rich films. The annual celebration of Spanish- and Portuguese-language  cinema, now in its 27th year, is underway through Oct. 5 at AFI Silver Theatre and Cultural Center in Silver Spring.

Here are a few recommendations:

Nise: The Heart of Madness

Country: Brazil

Dr. Nise da Silveira (Glória Pires) is appalled by the cruel and unusual tactics used on the patients of the psychiatric hospital that she is assigned to on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. To combat what she believes is malpractice, she becomes adamant about changing the patients’ experiences by introducing art healing as a more humane form of care.

Much Ado About Nothing

Country: Chile

After a beach night of drinking and fun, Vicente wakes up in the back seat of his car without a clue about a fatal accident. His new friends that he made during the night prior are blaming him for the crash. Now he’s forced to answer polices’ questions about last night’s  trail of events that he can’t remember. Based on the true story of politician’s son’s wild night out, this Chilean true story explores power and privilege (Peter Debruge).

My Friend From the Park

Country:  Argentina

Liz, mother of a newborn, finds herself feeling isolated. When she starts taking her child to the park, she develops a quick friendship with an off-the-wall character, Rosa. The friendship begins to take a turn when Liz gets a glimpse into Rosa’s world of theft and other unstable activities.

Rara

Country: Chile

Sara is entering the seemingly cutthroat journey through high school soon, which of course, is not complete without dealing with first crushes on boys. For a 13-year-old, if that isn’t nerve-wracking enough, she and her sister are figuring out how to adjust to their new home life. After her parents’ divorce, a custody battle ensures as her father is unsettled by the thought that Sara’s mother, Paula, is going to be raising them  with her lesbian partner. This coming-of-age film takes a journey through orientation, parenting, and high school.

Mr. Pig

Country: Mexico

Director Diego Luna created this family comedy that follows the long journey of pig-farmer, Ambrose (Danny Glover) and his adult daughter, Eunice (Maya Rudolph) as they search for a good home for a beloved pig. From California, to Jalisco, Mexico, the road trip touches on the distance within their father-daughter relationship and dealing with the deteriorating health of Ambrose.
