Maria
Maria is 32 years old. She was born in El Salvador. She came to the U.S.A. on March 9, 2007, looking for a better life for her children. Her first impression of Washington, DC, was that it was boring because she did not know the neighborhood. But with time, she adapted and now she lives on Chapin St. Before that, she lived in Mt. Pleasant for seven months but they had to move because their apartment was too small. She likes where she lives now because it is not hard to get things fixed and she has a good job. Now she works near Chinatown. For her shopping she goes to Panam and to get to work she walks. Her sons study at Lincoln and her daughter at Cordozo. She cannot enjoy herself because there are not many activities for her. She knows her neighbors, who speak English and Spanish. She likes her neighborhood because she feels safe. She goes to Sacred Heart Church with her children.
María tiene 32 años. Ella nació en El Salvador. Ellas vino a los EE.UU. el 9 de marzo de 2007 buscando una mejor vida para sus hijos. Su primera impresión [de Wasington, DC] fue que era aburrido porque no conocía el barrio pero con el tiempo se fue adaptando y ahora ella vive en la Chapin St. Antes de eso vivía en la Mt. Pleasant por siete meses pero se tuvieron que mudar porque era muy pequeño [su apartamento]. Le gusta en donde vive ahora porque no cuesta para que puedan arreglar las cosas y ella tiene un buen trabajo. Ahora trabaja por Chinatown. Para hacer las compras van a la Panam y para llegar a su trabajo se va caminando. Sus hijos estudian en Lincoln y su hija en Cardozo. No se pueden divertir porque no hay muchas actividades. Conoce a sus vecinos que hablan inglés y español. A ella le gusta su vecindario porque se siente segura. Ella va a la Iglesia Sagrado Corazón con sus hijos.
